Ziran Movement

Movement is life. We know this on many levels, from our own heartbeat, the rise and fall of our breath, the passing of night to day, the changing of the seasons, all rhythms of life. Our bodies are our “personal vehicles” through which to experience the world, and we feel and operate so much better when we are healthy and well taken care of. We thrive when we integrate movement into our daily lives. Movement brings more circulation and nourishment to our tissues and organs, our bodies are more flexible, and we are able to move through life with more ease. We are able to perform physical tasks without risking injury, and having a practice of movement helps you stay connected with your body.

At Ziran Movement (Ziran Dao Quan), we practice Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Quan Fa systems of movement. These practices from Chinese antiquity offer varying degrees of physical and cardiovascular exercise, combined with mental focus and discipline. The classes offer a pathway to develop deeper connections with your mind and body. The practice of these systems of movement promotes your sense of peace and well-being as well as strengthens your overall health and vitality. For me, it has become a way of life, as I have not stopped for 30+ years… See you in class.

  • Tai Chi

Tai Chi (Tai Ji Quan) is a form of Chinese martial arts with flowing and connected movements, and a focus on physical and mental coordination. There are many health benefits woven into the practice of Tai Chi, as it promotes physical balance and coordination, is beneficial for cardiovascular and cognitive health, and promotes mental calmness and an overall sense of well being. We practice Yang Family Tai Ji Quan, focusing on the Guang Ping form through the Yang Ban Hou lineage.

  • Qi Gong

Qi Gong is a practice which incorporates relatively short patterns of intentional meditative movement, combined with mindful breathing sequences. Specific styles of Medical Qi Gong are focused on promoting health within specific organs and regions of the body, and other styles of Qi Gong are more meditative and centering. We practice both styles, but with a focus on the Yi Quan Qi Gong system, which is in the tradition that was passed down through Sifu John Cole, who studied directly under Simu Min Ou Yang in San Francisco, CA.

  • Quan Fa

Quan Fa literally means “Fist Way”, and is analogous with the term “Kung Fu” that has come to mean Chinese martial arts in the West, but really the term is used to explain a skill obtained through dedication and hard-work. The Quan Fa / Kung Fu we teach at Ziran Movement incorporates multiple styles of martial arts, including Northern Shaolin, Tibetan White Crane, Emperor’s Long Fist, and Natural Style training. Each system of study has specific benefits and strengths, developing connections to Qi, intellect as well as physical strength and agility.
